When to Repair vs Replace Your AC in NYC (2026)

Lean toward replace when two or more of these are true: age over 12–15 years, a single repair over 50% of a new system, a failed compressor, an R-22 system needing refrigerant, or three or more service calls in 24 months. The quickest gut-check is the $5,000 rule: multiply the unit’s age in years by the repair quote — over $5,000 usually means replace.

The three rules of thumb

The 2026 refrigerant context

R-22 has been phased out for years and is expensive to recharge; any R-22 system needing refrigerant work is almost always a replacement.
