How to Check a NYC HVAC Contractor's Licence (2026)

In brief. To verify an NYC AC repair contractor's licence: open the NYC Legally Operating Businesses dataset, search by business name, and confirm the licence type reads Home Improvement Contractor and the status reads Active with an expiration date at least a few months in the future. A licence type of Electronic & Home Appliance Service Dealer is a narrower licence — legitimate for appliance service, not for full HIC-scope installs.

Why the DCWP licence matters

In New York City, any residential home improvement work costing more than $200 in labour and materials — including most AC repairs and installs — legally requires a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) licence issued by the NYC Department of Consumer & Worker Protection. An unlicensed contractor cannot enforce a contract in NYC civil court. If a dispute goes wrong, licence status is the first thing you will need.

The verification steps

  1. Open the NYC Legally Operating Businesses dataset on data.cityofnewyork.us.
  2. Use the "Business Name" filter and type the contractor's legal name. Try variants (e.g. "Petri Plumbing", "Petri Plumbing Heating Cooling") — small typos in the business name can hide the record.
  3. Look at the "License Type" column. Confirm it reads Home Improvement Contractor.
  4. Confirm the "License Status" reads Active.
  5. Confirm the "License Expiration Date" is at least a few months in the future — expired licences turn up regularly.
  6. Note the DCWP licence number (e.g. 2111314-DCA). Ask the contractor to state this number on the estimate.

Watch-outs

  • Different licence type. Some AC firms hold an "Electronic & Home Appliance Service Dealer" licence but not an HIC. That licence type is legitimate for appliance service (PTAC replacements, for instance) but does not cover full HIC-scope installations. Ask which licence type covers your specific job.
  • DBA vs legal name. The brand a company uses on its website is often not the legal entity on file with DCWP. Ask for the legal business name before searching.
  • Recently expired. An expired licence within the last 12 months usually means renewal is in process, not that the contractor is defunct. But do not sign a contract until the licence is Active again.
